Description

An affectionate pastiche of the classic girls school story as written by the likes of Angela Brazil. Chock full of slang like “topping”, and “scrummy”, the play concerns a scholarship girl from a poor family who attends the exclusive Grangewood School. The plot involves hidden treasure, a long-lost father, a conceited prefect, and the traditional lashings of hockey matches, secret passwords and dormitory pranks.

Description

Situated in a conservation area in the centre of Ramsbottom, The Theatre Royal was created by Summerseat Players in 1991 when they purchased the former "Royal Cinema" building which had been used as a snooker club during the 1980s. The building was gutted and an auditorium created with entirely voluntary labour. After 18 successful years the society had saved sufficient capital to be able to finance with £25,000 of lottery funding and a much larger bank overdraft a £400,000 redevelopment to modernise the ground floor facilities and to create a new first floor in the previous roof void above the old green room.

The raked auditorium seats 204 with wheelchair spaces and air conditioning; the new lounge and foyer incorporate a modern bar, a disabled toilet and modern facilities for all patrons. Upstairs the new "Studio" is capable of many uses including small scale performances, concerts, rehearsals, group meetings, classes and dances.

The main auditorium stage incorporates a "revolve" and the two dressing rooms each have toilet facilities (one of which is to disabled use standards). Sound & Lighting are full computerised. Projected stage images are also provided for.

Real2Reel Cinema Club now show films 12 times a year thus returning cinema to its natural home in Ramsbottom. The Players also host other community events and outside concerts and the several different parts of the building are available to hire - contact via website at http://www.summerseatplayers.co.uk.
